3D SCANNING, MOTION
DESIGN, & RENDERING

RAVEN CARVING
2022

Raven Carving needed high quality, precision
3D models of their traditional sculptures, both
to create a high fidelity digital archive of the
works, and as a way to present them to new
audiences in a variety of digital formats.

Scanning Sculptures

Creating high quality &
consistency in 3D scanning

Portability

Using DSLR cameras, LED lighting, and a large rotating turntable, I created a compact and portable system to capture high fidelity 360º photos of each sculpture.

Versatility

The system efficiently captured the shape, texture, and fine detail of each work, weighing up to 300 lbs and 2 feet in diameter.

Sculpture

The process starts with a 360º series of photos taken in a spherical pattern, capturing every angle of the object.

Point Cloud

The resulting photos are imported and processed by software to create a “point cloud” depth model.

Final scan / 3D model

The point cloud is then rendered into a 3D mesh, with textural details and lighting. With some post processing, color adjustments, and lighting, the final model is created.
